NO INSTANT/”PUSHBUTTON” PORTFOLIOS: Clients open accounts at varying times – different points in the economic and market cycle. Their ages vary as do their goals, needs, and tolerance for risk. Thus their portfolios should not be composed of the same holdings. This “model portfolio” approach, common today is certainly efficient from a business point of view but this is not a business. It is an investment counseling profession and these are clients – not customers. After almost forty years many of them are friends and family. I build portfolios opportunistically and carefully over time taking the above into consideration. I am an independent thinker and invest in research from professionals that are independent and free from the conflicts of interest and bias that accompany the mix of business so common to big investment banks.
